Most sustainability improvements to a website require effort: optimizing images, trimming scripts, lightening pages. They're worth doing, but they take work. There's one exception, a single change that meaningfully reduces your website's carbon footprint without touching your design, your code, or your content at all: switching to green hosting. Because a website's emissions come partly from the energy that powers the servers running it, moving to a host powered by renewable energy can cut a substantial portion of your site's carbon footprint with essentially no downside (1). The good news is that reputable green hosts are competitive on performance, you generally don't have to choose. Verify the host is fast and reliable, then enjoy the lower footprint as a bonus. Confirm and, optionally, display it. Once on green hosting, you have a genuine sustainability credential you can mention honestly (without greenwashing) if it matters to your buyers.
