But across the dimensions that actually matter, speed, clarity, conversion, sustainability, maintainability, a lighter website usually outperforms a heavier one, and the additions that feel like progress often subtract from results. Lightweight design, deliberately doing less, keeping your site lean, is a counterintuitive but powerful approach that helps you more by including less. This piece makes the case for less. A lighter website wins on multiple fronts simultaneously, because weight (in content, features, and visual elements) carries costs that compound. On speed: a lighter site loads faster (less to load), and faster converts better. On clarity: a leaner site with less competing for attention is clearer and easier to act on (the simplicity and focus principles, every added element competes for attention and can dilute the path to action). On conversion: speed and clarity both lift conversion, so lighter tends to convert better. On sustainability: a lighter site uses less energy (smaller footprint). And on maintainability: less to maintain means less to keep correct and update. So the additions that feel like progress, more sections, features, flourishes, often impose costs across all these dimensions (slower, more cluttered, harder to maintain) that exceed the value they add. Add only what genuinely serves the visitor and your conversion goal, and be skeptical of additions that mostly add weight. 4, Prefer simple over elaborate. Where a simple solution and an elaborate one both work, prefer the simple (lighter) one, it's usually faster, clearer, and more maintainable. Elaborateness should earn its weight. 5, Periodically prune. Sites accumulate weight over time (added pages, features, scripts). Periodically prune what's no longer earning its place, keeping the site light is ongoing, not one-time. The lightest element is the one you removed.
