Designing the "Why Us" Section That Actually Differentiates

Open the "Why Choose Us" section of nearly any service website and you'll find the same list: "Experienced. Dedicated. Results-driven. Client-focused. Quality work." It's so universal that it has become invisible, a section every business includes and no buyer reads, because it differentiates nothing. The cruel irony is that this section exists specifically to set you apart, and the way it's almost always written does the opposite: it makes you sound identical to every competitor making the same claims. A buyer comparing you against the firm in the next tab finds two "experienced, dedicated, results-driven" teams and no actual basis to choose. This piece shows how to build a "Why Us" section that genuinely differentiates. The principles draw on the conversion and trust research cited across this library; the framework is mine.

Executive summary

Every service site has a "why choose us" section, and almost all of them say the same interchangeable things. Here's how to build one that actually separates you from the competitor in the next…

Section 1

Why the standard "Why Us" fails

The failure has a precise cause: the standard section is built from unfalsifiable, universal claims. "Experienced," "dedicated," "results-driven", every competitor can and does say these, they can't be disproven, and they describe a category, not a difference. This is the falsifiability problem at the heart of weak positioning: a claim that any rival could make, truthfully or not, carries no information and therefore no persuasion. The buyer's brain discounts these claims entirely, because it has learned they're free to assert and universal. So the section meant to differentiate becomes wallpaper. The principle: a differentiator that your competitor could also claim isn't a differentiator, it's filler. (This applies the falsifiability/specificity principle established across this library to the "Why Us" section.) If your competitor could copy your "Why Choose Us" section onto their own site without lying, it differentiates nothing. The whole job of this section is to say something they can't, and "experienced and dedicated" is something everyone says.

Section 2

How to build a "Why Us" that differentiates

Four moves replace universal claims with genuine differentiation. 1, Lead with what's actually different, not what's expected. Being "experienced" or "quality-focused" is table stakes, the buyer assumes it. Your "Why Us" should lead with what's genuinely distinctive about your approach, method, focus, or perspective, the things a competitor couldn't truthfully claim. If you can't name something different, that's a positioning problem to solve first. 2, Make every claim specific and falsifiable. Replace "results-driven" with a specific, checkable claim: a named result, a distinctive method, a concrete guarantee. Specificity is what makes a claim believable and ownable, "we rebuilt 40 service firms' intake systems and the average added 30% more booked calls" can't be copied by a rival who hasn't done it. 3, Frame differences as buyer benefits, not features. A real difference only persuades if the buyer sees what it does for them. Translate each distinctive trait into the outcome it produces, not "we use a proprietary process" but "our process means you see results in weeks, not quarters." 4, Take a position, including what you're NOT. Genuine differentiation often comes from what you don't do or who you're not for. "We only work with established firms, not early-stage startups" differentiates more than any superlative, because it's a real, specific stance a generalist competitor can't make. A point of view is inherently differentiating.

Section 3

The "Why Us" rebuild, in one view

The strategic point: the "Why Us" section is prime real estate that most businesses waste on interchangeable claims, leaving the buyer with no basis to choose them over the next tab. Rebuild it around genuine, specific, falsifiable differences framed as buyer benefits, including the positions and exclusions that competitors can't claim, and it finally does its job: giving a comparing buyer a real reason to pick you. In a market where everyone says "experienced and dedicated," saying something true that only you could say is the entire game. (The four-move rebuild is my synthesis of the falsifiability and conversion principles cited across this library.)

Execute This With AI

Step 1, Inputs. Paste your current "Why Us" section, and note what you genuinely do differently (method, focus, results, stance). Step 2, Run the prompt: You are a positioning strategist rebuilding my "Why Choose Us" section. The standard version fails because it uses universal, unfalsifiable claims ("experienced, dedicated, results-driven") that every competitor also makes. A real differentiator is specific, falsifiable, framed as a buyer benefit, and often includes a position or exclusion competitors can't claim. My current "Why Us": """[PASTE]""" What I genuinely do differently (method/focus/results/who I'm NOT for): [DESCRIBE] Do four things: 1. Flag every universal/unfalsifiable claim in my current section (the filler). 2. Turn my real differences into specific, falsifiable, ownable claims (mark gaps needing my real facts as [NEED INPUT]). 3. Reframe each as a benefit for the buyer. 4. Propose a position or exclusion (who I'm NOT for) that would differentiate me. Never give me claims a competitor could also make. Step 3, The competitor test. "For each claim in my rebuilt section, could a typical competitor copy it onto their site without lying? Cut or sharpen any that pass that test." Tools and expected output. Any frontier chat model. Expect a filler audit, specific ownable claims, benefit reframes, and a differentiating position. The QA discipline: apply the competitor test ruthlessly, anything a rival could also claim is filler, regardless of how good it sounds, and only the claims they couldn't make actually differentiate. Never let the model invent the specific results that back your claims; those must be real. The model sharpens the positioning; your real differences and proof fill it. Your "Why Choose Us" section exists to set you apart, and written the standard way, experienced, dedicated, results-driven, it does the exact opposite, making you interchangeable with the competitor in the next tab. The fix is to say something true that only you could say: lead with genuine differences, make every claim specific and falsifiable, frame each as a buyer benefit, and take positions (including who you're not for) that rivals can't. Run the competitor test on every line, cut anything they could copy, and the section finally earns its place, giving a comparing buyer the one thing the standard version never does: a real reason to choose you.
